Maintenance/Safety Precautions
Wood Burning Fireplaces:
READ OWNER’S MANUAL PRIOR TO USING FIREPLACE FOR THE FIRST TIME. BE SURE BUILDER/CONTRACTOR PROVIDES THIS MANUAL

- Have fireplace inspected PRIOR to using for the 1st time. It is critical to verify that the condition of the system has not been altered/damaged from the original date of installation by other subcontractors during the building process. Verification of proper clearances to combustible items like framing, insulation, electrical, sheetrock, etc...is important.

- Follow directions in manual on how to cure/build a fire for the 1st few fires.

- Do not overfire your fireplace.

- Fireplace is approved as a decorative fireplace & not a primary source of heat.

- Have fireplace inspected &/or cleaned twice a year or as recommended by a certified chimney sweep.

- Firebrick or refactories break down over time & should be inspected/replaced as needed

- Do not burn "unseasoned" wood – Unseasoned wood can cause the accumulation of CREOSOTE.

- Check for "FALSE CHIMNEYS" around the fireplace openings at the top & sides of the fireplace before building fire

- Be sure the hole in the side of the fireplace where the gas line penetrates is sealed with mortar or high-temperature caulk.

- Check around/behind the damper for left over construction debris/trash prior to using fireplace for the 1st time & on a regular basis thereafter.

- Do not attach non-UL listed termination caps/shrouds on top of your chimney.
Gas Fireplaces (vented, non-vented, b-vent, direct-vent):

- Have the valve, fittings, & burner inspected yearly by a qualified installer.

- Check the flue system yearly to be sure there is no blockage or damage.
